The March of Patriots The Struggle for Modern Australia Paul Kelly Books Reviews
- "The March of Patriots" is the first of two volumes by Paul Kelly designed to cover the Keating-Howard years in Australian politics. In other words, the years between 1991 and 2007; sixteen years that transformed Australia.
Kelly has performed a significant piece of scholarship with this book. He has interviewed more than 100 of the key players including politicians, public servants, commentators, advisers and members of the military. In the process, he has woven together a solid record of the events that closed with the Howard victory in the 2001 general election.
Unlike Kelly's earlier work "The End of Certainty" which documents the changes in the Australian economic landscape, particularly under Prime Minister Hawke, "The March of Patriots" is more of a political work. Kelly forensically documents the various twists and turns of the Australian body politic. This he achieves with great aplomb.
To many, "The March of Patriots" will be seen a book for the political junkie, the political aficionado. Arguably this is true. However, it can also be read by those who seek a broader understanding of Australia's recent history. Politics has impinged significantly on this history and Kelly has admirably recorded this impact.
